Camino is short for Camino de Santiago or Way of St. James. This "thing people do" is actually a UNESCO World Heritage Site in and of itself. The Camino is one of many pilgrimage routes to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. Catholics believe the remains of the apostle Saint James are buried there.
The camino has been continuously walked for over a thousan years! In modern times its not just a catholic activity. People of all religions and creeds do the camino. However the Camino is still considered a spiritual adventure. I feel this connection with other pilgrims I've met and it all starts with "¡Buen Camino!"
PS: I'm not bs'ing about the all religions statement: I saw a man todays doing his prayers facing Mecca when I arrived at the albergue. This surprises me especially since its Ramadan and he can't eat or drink during the day. How does he do it?
